Elon Musk has backed a viral social media post forecasting that leading US artificial intelligence labs will achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI) by the year 2027. His single-word response deemed the prediction accurate, quickly gathering 1.8 million views in roughly three hours.
Authored by X user Dr Singularity, the original post claims that Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 already feels close to achieving AGI. It further suggests that similar breakthroughs will follow from Google, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and other competitors.
Musk’s Nod Lands in a Month Crowded With AGI Claims
Earlier this month, OpenAI President Greg Brockman characterized the September 3 launch of GPT-6 Astra as a “generational leap.”
“Welcome to the AGI era,” he stated during the briefing.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang likewise posted on X that AGI had arrived, and Musk has put forward comparable claims regarding his own enterprise.
When an X user inquired on September 14 about how close Grok 4.8 would get to AGI, Musk responded that AGI would materialize with the release of Grok 5—an interaction previously covered by BeInCrypto.
The recent thread connects this ongoing trajectory directly to energy and power infrastructure.
“This prediction is based on the amount of compute they already have + additional compute being added all the time….It looks like few GW of compute are enough for strong AGI, now imagine what we will able to do with 10-20GW of compute which are rapidly coming online,” wrote Dr Singularity.
Traders Keep Their Distance From 2027
Prediction markets have not aligned with Musk’s optimistic outlook. Traders on Kalshi estimated a roughly 44.3% probability that OpenAI will announce AGI prior to 2028.
Skepticism grows steeper regarding a timeline within the current year. Polymarket traders assigned OpenAI an 18% chance of announcing AGI before 2027, whereas Kalshi priced that outcome at 14.8%.
Similar caution comes from experts associated with the benchmark OpenAI featured at its launch. Mike Knoop, co-founder of Zapier and the ARC Prize, described Astra’s performance as a major leap forward while noting that definitive proof of AGI is still missing.
Warnings Take Aim at the Speed of the Race
At the same time, the very labs competing to reach AGI are among those sounding alarms about its consequences. In a September 6 essay, OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki asserted that no laboratory has successfully resolved alignment and monitoring challenges adequately.
“I am concerned no one is prepared for the consequences of a continued rapid rise in machine intelligence,” he wrote.
Jerome Glenn, chair of the AGI Panel for the UN Council of Presidents of the General Assembly, cautioned that if governments fail to adequately regulate the transition to AGI, humanity risks losing control over advanced machine intelligence.
“AGI could enable some states and malicious non-state actors to build chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons. Moreover, large AGI-controlled swarms of lethal autonomous weapons could themselves constitute a new category of WMDs,” he added.
Other experts question whether the current competitive race will successfully yield AGI at all. Turing Award winner Yann LeCun, who co-founded the AI startup AMI Labs, stated on X on September 20 that autoregressive large language models on their own will fail to reach human-level AI.
He argued that if such an outcome were possible through those methods alone, consumers would already have access to home robots and Level-4 or Level-5 self-driving vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What did Elon Musk say about the 2027 AGI prediction?
Elon Musk endorsed a viral post on X predicting that major US labs will reach AGI by 2027 by replying with a single word: “Accurate.”
What do prediction markets say about an AGI breakthrough by 2027?
Traders are skeptical of a 2027 timeline. Polymarket gives OpenAI an 18% chance of announcing AGI before 2027, while Kalshi prices it at 14.8%. However, Kalshi traders put the odds at roughly 44.3% for an announcement before 2028.
Why do some experts doubt current AI methods will reach AGI?
Turing Award winner Yann LeCun has argued that autoregressive large language models alone cannot achieve human-level AI, noting that if they could, consumers would already have fully autonomous vehicles and home robots.
What safety concerns have been raised regarding the AGI race?
OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki warned that no lab has solved alignment and monitoring well enough, and UN Council of Presidents AGI Panel chair Jerome Glenn cautioned that unmanaged AGI could lead to advanced biological weapons or autonomous weapons swarms.
