Solana Developers Say “No Alpenrush” as Alpenglow Mainnet Launch Rumors Collapse

Reports claiming the Alpenglow mainnet will launch on September 28 are incorrect. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko shut down the speculation with a single-word response: “decel.”

Designed as a consensus overhaul, Alpenglow aims to achieve 150-millisecond finality, a major improvement over the current full finality time of approximately 12.8 seconds. Prior to the clarification, certain media outlets had cautioned that the token might face a price drop if the transition failed to occur.

Alpenglow Mainnet Launch Date Traced to a Validator Schedule

Roger Wattenhofer—who serves as head of research at Anza and is a professor at ETH Zurich—disputed the rumors on X. Anza is the developer behind Agave, which acts as Solana’s main validator client.

Why would we test a protocol for only a few days before activating it? There is no Alpenrush.

Wattenhofer emphasized that Alpenglow had only just entered public testing a few days prior.

Following this, Yakovenko quoted the post and wrote “decel,” a common crypto term indicating a slowdown. Conversely, the term “accel” is used to advocate for faster development.

The confusion likely originated from Anza’s Agave v4.3 release schedule, which marks September 28 as the date mainnet feature activation resumes. However, the schedule does not reference Alpenglow.

Additionally, the timeline for the subsequent v4.4 update schedules the next mainnet activation window for November 9. Anza labels this timeframe as tentative, and it also contains no mention of Alpenglow.

SOL Price Barely Reacts to the Clarification

Data from BeInCrypto Markets shows Solana (SOL) changing hands at $119.85 at the time of writing, marking a minor 24-hour decline of 0.36%. This subdued market reaction indicates that very few traders had anticipated a September 28 Alpenglow mainnet deployment.

This cautious approach follows recent network events. Back in August, a routing error brought Solana near a complete network shutdown. Given that history, Wattenhofer’s remarks highlight that developers are prioritizing safety over rushing a consensus modification.

Furthermore, Alpenglow is not the sole performance enhancement currently underway. Solana initiated a reduction of its block time from 400 down to 200 milliseconds in August. While that adjustment accelerates block creation speed, Alpenglow focuses specifically on finality times.

Validators have been preparing for Alpenglow since July. At present, the upgrade remains on the testnet, and neither Agave release schedule provides an official mainnet release date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Alpenglow mainnet launching on September 28?

No. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko and Anza’s head of research Roger Wattenhofer both dismissed the rumor, clarifying that there is no imminent launch.

What is the purpose of Alpenglow?

Alpenglow is a consensus overhaul designed to bring finality down to 150 milliseconds from the current 12.8 seconds.

How did the September 28 rumor start?

The rumor likely stemmed from Anza’s Agave v4.3 release schedule, which marks September 28 for the resumption of mainnet feature activation, though it does not mention Alpenglow.

How did the price of SOL react to the news?

SOL experienced a minimal price movement, trading down just 0.36% to $119.85, showing that traders had not priced in a September launch.
