Arthur Hayes Thinks FLOP Could Outgrow Bitcoin. Its Testnet Is Weeks Away

Arthur Hayes says Flop Labs will ship the FLOP testnet within weeks. The 90-day trial is the only route to the project’s genesis airdrop, so miners, validators, and AI agents must earn their share.

Yet Flop Labs’ own testnet page sets no launch date. Instead, it ties the start to readiness criteria and allows an extension if the team misses them.

What Happens on the Testnet?

Hayes, the BitMEX co-founder who left retirement to lead Flop Labs in August, posted the update after TOKEN2049 Singapore.

The startup is building a blockchain where AI agents rent computing power. Agents would pay in FLOP whenever they need a model to answer a request or storage for their data.

The miners here are GPU owners. These are people or data centers with graphics processing units (GPUs), the chips that also run AI models like ChatGPT.

Bitcoin miners spend electricity guessing numbers to secure their network, and that work has no other use. By contrast, Flop’s proof-of-useful-inference model pays miners for real AI tasks.

In return, miners earn block rewards plus most of the inference fees. Validators, meanwhile, confirm that the work actually happened. Hayes first sketched the idea in his creation-style FLOP pitch.

The testnet rehearses that market with worthless test tokens. Miners earn credit only for verified compute, so idle hardware scores nothing.

Validators compete for 1,000 mainnet seats based on their testnet ranking. Agents, in contrast, must actually spend faucet tokens on inference, because holding them earns nothing.

Why Hayes Thinks FLOP Could Outgrow Bitcoin

FLOP borrows heavily from Bitcoin’s design. Blocks arrive about every second, and each one pays 96 FLOP to miners.

That reward halves every 730 days, echoing the Bitcoin halving cycle at twice the pace. A September draft caps supply near 18.1 billion tokens after 10 years, with 24.3% reserved for the airdrop.

The project also skips the usual fundraising. It has no presale and no venture capital allocation, and Hayes says he funded the team himself.

Hayes goes further. He cites Reed’s Law, the idea that a network’s value soars as users form groups, to argue Flop could one day be worth more than Bitcoin.

However, no published model backs that claim. The Yellow Paper is still a draft at version 0.5.0, and the team flags many of its figures as provisional.

The FLOP testnet also launches into a crowded field. Render and Ocean Network already rent out idle GPUs for AI work.

Hayes expects the AI data center boom to overbuild and end in a bailout. Meanwhile, the FLOP testnet will show whether his own AI venture can draw real demand for compute.
