How AI Killed This $5 Billion Picture Company

Getty Images, which has sold photos to newsrooms and advertisers for three decades, will file for bankruptcy and go private. The business will keep running, but public shareholders stand to lose almost everything.

Getty was valued at about $4.8 billion on its 2022 return to the stock market. AI image tools later squeezed its stock photo business. Then $2.1 billion in debt, with quarterly interest costs up 57% in a year, pushed it into bankruptcy.

The Unfortunate Reality of Getty Images

The damage showed up first in Creative, the stock photo arm that competes directly with AI image generators. Its sales grew just 0.7% in 2025, Getty reported.

Annual subscribers fell 11.4% that year. Total sales then slipped 2.5% in the second quarter of 2026.

Getty’s own annual report names the threat.

“…customers may opt for AI generated content that bypasses traditional licensing models,” read an excerpt in the filing.

Getty also lost its legal fight. It sued Stability AI, maker of the Stable Diffusion image generator, in Britain. In November 2025, the High Court dismissed its main copyright claims.

How Debt Finished Getty Images

Getty returned to the stock market in 2022 by merging with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), a listed shell built to take private firms public.

A $3.7 billion merger with rival Shutterstock promised relief. Getty scrapped it in July after Britain’s competition regulator demanded Shutterstock sell its whole news photo business. The deal had cost Getty about $60.4 million.

Lawsuits drained cash too. Investors holding warrants, rights to buy shares, from the 2022 listing sued and won. Getty paid $110.9 million in judgments and interest last quarter, its filing shows.

By June 30, Getty held $51.6 million in cash. It also warned of substantial doubt over its ability to keep operating.

Under the deal, the Getty family and Koch Equity Development will own 100% after committing up to $533 million. Bondholders agreed to retire $270 million of notes.

The stock closed at $0.0147 on October 12, down 68% on the day, according to Yahoo Finance.

“Getty Images is down -99.95% in the last four years as AI kills its business,” analyst Bull Theory noted.

The photo library survives the restructuring. Getty already earns money licensing that content to train AI models, its filings show, echoing a path rival Shutterstock took when it partnered with OpenAI in 2023.
