Crypto Markets Face Major Liquidation Risk, Q3 Data Shows

Crypto just added $840 billion in three months. But beneath the rally, trading on major spot exchanges is falling while leveraged bets are piling up.

CoinGecko’s Q3 2026 report shows crypto market capitalization jumped 39.6% to nearly $3 trillion. Yet spot trading on the ten largest centralized exchanges dropped 14.2% from the previous quarter to $1.65 trillion.

Rising prices need willing buyers. Weak trading activity can make a rally harder to sustain and price swings more severe if sellers suddenly rush for the exits. Spot exchange volumes do not capture every trade, and activity improved toward September.

The Bigger Danger Is $100 Billion in Futures Bets

Meanwhile, open interest on the ten largest perpetual futures exchanges surged 40.6% to $102.2 billion. Open interest measures outstanding derivatives contracts, many of which use leverage to magnify gains and losses.

The report says open interest last stayed above $100 billion between May and November 2025.

That stretch included October 10, when Donald Trump’s tariff threat against China triggered a selloff that snowballed into more than $19 billion in forced liquidations.

Bitcoin fell 14.5% and Ethereum lost 12.2%. As leveraged positions were automatically closed, the selling intensified, catching traders who had expected the rally to continue.

Ethereum’s Rally Has Its Own Warning

Ethereum gained 71% in Q3, reaching $2,684, helped by $3.1 billion in US spot ETF inflows. Yet its average daily trading volume dropped 23.2% to $11.5 billion.

Investors were paying much more for ETH even as fewer dollars changed hands each day. ETF inflows provided real support, but weaker trading activity raises doubts about how widely the rebound is shared.

Rising open interest alone does not mean traders are overwhelmingly bullish, or that another crash is imminent.

Prices have recovered faster than the market’s underlying trading activity, leaving less room for a sudden shock.
