Vitalik Buterin Reveals Why AI Could Push Bitcoin Miners Out

Bitcoin mining cost is split roughly evenly between hardware and electricity, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said on X. AI inference, by contrast, is almost entirely a hardware bill, he added.

That contrast matters because miners and AI firms increasingly chase the same power sites. Yet the two industries spend their money in very different places.

What Drives Bitcoin Mining Cost Per Coin?

Buterin shared the observation alongside a cost table. Its line items add up to roughly $93,700 per coin.

Electricity is the largest line. Power fed directly into the machines costs $40,600 per coin, or 43.3% of the total. Other electricity adds another $2,400.

Meanwhile, compute capital expenditure (capex) runs about $37,600. That covers hardware, cooling, and power gear, including financing, and equals roughly 40% of the Bitcoin mining cost.

Labor, facility rent, maintenance, insurance, taxes, and bandwidth make up the remaining 14% or so. That leaves electricity and compute capex close to even, at roughly 46% and 40%.

The table’s total lands above JPMorgan’s recent Bitcoin production cost estimate of $85,000.

It also sits above Bitcoin’s current price, so an average miner would not cover its full costs.

Why AI Plays by Different Power Rules

AI inference flips that ratio, according to Buterin. Running trained models depends mostly on expensive chips, so power takes a much smaller slice of each dollar.

As a result, an AI operator can likely absorb higher electricity prices than a miner can. For miners, however, power makes up a far larger share of Bitcoin mining cost.

That gap already shapes the market. Many miners hold permitted grid capacity that AI developers can’t build fast enough, as local data center restrictions spread.

Some industry voices now ask whether AI could push mining out of the most expensive sites entirely.

Others want to merge the two models. BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes, for instance, is building a Bitcoin-style AI mining network that pays GPU owners.

If Buterin’s math holds, cheap power remains the miner’s edge, while cheap capital favors AI. The next contest for energy sites may hinge less on Bitcoin mining cost and more on who can finance hardware fastest.
