Dogecoin’s New App Network Is Live. Why the DOGE Price Isn’t Reacting

Dogecoin (DOGE) barely moved after the DogeOS testnet opened to the public on September 30. The network lets developers run smart contract apps that use DOGE for fees.

The team behind the MyDoge wallet built DogeOS. For holders, the launch adds a use case beyond payments and tipping.

What the DogeOS Testnet Changes for DOGE

DOGE has hardly moved since the launch, and the Dogecoin price still sits below its late-September peak.

DogeOS works as a zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup, a layer-2 network that bundles transactions and proves them with cryptography. Its documentation says it stores data on Ethereum and relies on Dogecoin for finality.

It also supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). As a result, Ethereum developers can move existing apps over with few changes.

DOGE already covers fees on Dogecoin’s main chain. On DogeOS, it also pays for running smart contracts, the docs show.

The team says early projects include Barkswap, a liquidity engine, Derps, a perpetual exchange, and Snag, a prediction market aggregator.

Why the DOGE Price Shrugged Off the Launch

Still, testnet DOGE comes from a faucet and holds no real value. Therefore, the launch creates no immediate demand for the coin.

Even on mainnet, rollup fees tend to be small. Bridged DOGE locked inside apps could matter more for holders.

Ecosystem backers see a turning point all the same. Timothy Stebbing, a director of the Dogecoin Foundation, hopes DogeOS becomes a gateway for the next 100 startups on Dogecoin.

“L1 ledger purity must stay intact while we introduce utility one layer above, and that is what DogeOS represents to me.”

The official Dogecoin account on X called the launch a huge milestone and hinted at more ecosystem news.

Meanwhile, Dogecoin ETFs posted record weekly inflows in late September, even as Bitwise moved to shut its Dogecoin ETF.

However, Shiba Inu offers a cautionary example. Shibarium usage has collapsed despite years as the ecosystem’s own layer-2.

DogeOS has not shared a mainnet date in its documentation. Real usage after launch will likely decide whether DOGE’s new role moves the price.
