Abstract, a blockchain built for consumer crypto apps, is shutting down after almost three years. It joins hundreds of crypto projects that have already closed in 2026.
The news has turned attention back to Pudgy Penguins. The non-fungible token (NFT) floor price climbed, while its token, Pudgy Penguins (PENGU), moved the other way.
Tens of Millions Later, Igloo Pulls Its Funding
Abstract will go offline on December 15, 2026. Users must bridge their assets off the chain before then or lose access to them.
The team blamed a restricted decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, thin liquidity, minimal institutional crossover, and a limited budget for its stalled growth. Igloo also pointed to the high cost of running a standalone chain and weaker market demand.
“We explored every angle behind the scenes over these last 12-months in an attempt to find product-market fit and make the chain scale. We wanted to make things work; but the chain landscape had changed radically and we were facing significant headwinds,” it said.
Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, had been funding Abstract for the past 18 months, CEO Luca Netz said.
“After losing tens of millions of dollars over two years, building consumer products, assembling an all-star team, onboarding some of the biggest brands in the world, and building a community of millions, we still had not found product-market fit,” he wrote.
Netz added that Igloo considered launching a token or an initial coin offering (ICO) but decided against both. The company will now focus on Pudgy Penguins, its NFTs, and PENGU.
RootData’s tracker listed 347 crypto projects that stopped operating, went bankrupt, or went offline for long periods in 2026, as of its August 24 update.
More closures have come since. Harmony announced its shutdown in September, while Blast set an October 26 withdrawal deadline.
NFT Buyers Step In as PENGU Slides
Following the announcement, the Pudgy Penguins floor price rose from about 3.07 Ethereum (ETH) to 3.37 ETH, according to X user StarPlatinum. The collection logged 69 sales and 237 ETH in volume, roughly 10 times a normal day.
PENGU moved the other way. BeInCrypto Markets data shows the token at $0.00917, down 4.17% over 24 hours.
At that level, PENGU trades about 87% below its all-time high of $0.06845, set on December 17, 2024.
With Abstract winding down, Netz said Igloo will put its full attention on “making Pudgy Penguins into the global & cultural phenomenon I know it can become.” Igloo laid out its next steps in a separate post.
The company said closing Abstract lets it pull its staff and resources behind Pudgy Penguins. It described the brand as a funnel. Most people first find Pudgy Penguins through its products and content, then join the community through PENGU, with the NFTs as the deepest tier.
Igloo said it plans to sharpen that path and build on what already works, rather than spreading into new areas.
