Britain’s Bank Lobby Kicks Out Coinbase: Are Lenders Shutting Crypto Out?

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has been stripped of its membership in UK Finance, the prominent advocacy group representing Britain’s banking sector. According to a Bloomberg report published on Wednesday, the organization’s board issued a termination letter to the U.S.-based platform last week.

Representing approximately 300 financial and banking institutions, UK Finance revoked the membership following a review of its eligibility criteria. Sources familiar with the situation told Bloomberg that Coinbase retains the right to appeal the decision.

What Losing the UK Finance Seat Means for Coinbase

The details emerged from individuals close to the matter speaking with Bloomberg. UK Finance functions as an industry association for the banking and finance community rather than a government regulator.

Consequently, this removal has no impact on the regulatory licenses Coinbase holds from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the UK’s financial watchdog. The company’s operations within the UK are proceeding without disruption.

Throughout the year, Coinbase has actively grown its British footprint. In July, the FCA awarded the platform an investment license that encompasses both stocks and derivatives. This regulatory greenlight enabled UK retail customers to buy and sell shares directly on the application for the very first time.

“Coinbase is building the everything exchange: one platform, one login, for your entire financial life,” the exchange said.

The company shared this vision in its official UK licensing announcement. Conversely, competitor Robinhood secured a more restricted UK crypto authorization in August.

Why UK Banks and Crypto Firms Are Clashing

This exclusion coincides with persistent friction regarding banking transactions. Back in January, the UK Cryptoasset Business Council released data showing that traditional lenders were delaying or blocking roughly 40% of transfers directed toward digital asset platforms.

That study surveyed 10 different exchanges, including Coinbase. Furthermore, 70% of those participating platforms reported that British banks had become increasingly antagonistic over the preceding year.

Regulatory tensions are also evident in policy decisions. Despite removing restrictions on individual retail holdings, the Bank of England maintains its intention to enforce limits on stablecoin issuance.

Tensions between traditional finance and crypto extend well beyond the UK. In the United States, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has vowed to oppose the CLARITY Act, a proposed crypto bill designed to establish regulatory frameworks for digital asset markets.

While Coinbase has the option to contest the UK Finance ruling, the company notes that the country’s comprehensive crypto regulatory framework is scheduled to take full effect in October 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Coinbase lose its FCA license?

No. UK Finance is a trade body and not a regulator, meaning its decision to terminate membership does not affect Coinbase’s regulatory licenses from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Can Coinbase challenge the decision?

Yes, Coinbase is permitted to appeal the termination letter issued by the board of UK Finance.

When does the UK’s full crypto regime take effect?

According to Coinbase, Britain’s comprehensive crypto regulatory framework is set to go into effect in October 2027.
