Trump Might Meet AI CEOs on September 29. Nobody Knows Who’s Invited Yet

Reports indicate that President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and various technology CEOs are scheduled to convene on September 29 to discuss artificial intelligence (AI).

This upcoming gathering arrives amid escalating debates over AI safety. Prominent artificial intelligence firms have issued warnings regarding the hazards of the technology, while other industry executives remain skeptical about proposals to decelerate development.

Anthropic’s Call Meets a Cybersecurity Skeptic

Earlier this month, Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon stepped down, claiming that both Anthropic and OpenAI were failing to act responsibly. Furthermore, his colleague Evan Hubinger estimated the probability of AI causing human extinction within ten years at over 10%.

Shortly after, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei released an essay advocating for a slowdown in the advancement of AI capabilities. This appeal received support from OpenAI’s Sam Altman and SpaceX’s Elon Musk.

Conversely, Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora challenged these intentions. Utilizing the platform X, he characterized the push for deceleration as a covert commercial tactic. In a subsequent interview with CNBC, he expressed his view that these laboratories were seeking regulatory sympathy and a means to evade liability.

Arora currently considers such pacing to be unachievable, maintaining that certain developers will inevitably continue pushing frontier development.

“I think more than likely that some people will jump the gun, and you’ll have still people developing at the frontier, which means we shouldn’t try and stop the frontiers because they’re the most responsible people,” Arora said.

Additionally, Arora rejected the 10% human extinction projection, labeling it extremely improbable.

Are AI Labs Actually Pumping the Brakes?

Amodei’s essay clarified that pacing would not involve halting model training entirely, and the labs supporting the idea have continued to roll out new models.

On September 22, Anthropic debuted Claude Opus 5.5, marking its inaugural release since advocating for slower frontier progress. The firm noted that external evaluators, such as METR, assessed the model prior to its launch.

Concurrently, OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Sol and Luna on the same day, following the September 4 release of its flagship model, GPT-6 Astra.

Google has maintained its release schedule as well, deploying Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking on September 15. Additionally, DeepMind executive Koray Kavukcuoglu disclosed that Gemini 4 has progressed to the post-training phase.

As these systems become available to the public, the Trump administration has commented on accountability for AI safety. On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent asserted that AI developers ought to assume responsibility rather than rely on a federal liability shield.

This position contradicts the liability protection that Arora suspected labs were seeking. To date, neither a comprehensive guest list nor a specific agenda has been published for the September 29 meeting, leaving uncertainty as to whether discussions will focus on regulation, industry protections, U.S. competitiveness, or a combination thereof.
